Art in America Magazine

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

Art in American is an influential, illustrated monthly magazine, founded in 1913. It focuses on contemporary art in the United States, including profiles of artists and genres, updates about art movements, show reviews and event schedules. It was bought by Art News in 2015, so it is now hosted on the Art News website (which we review and list separately).

In addition to the influential articles the website also has exhaustive listing of a range of US art galleries, consultants, museums, dealers and universities. An excellent resource if you are seeking a US art professional.

"The most comprehensive national printed directory of galleries, artists, dealers, consultants, museums, and nonprofit spaces available."

The magazine is written for collectors, artists, art dealers, art professionals and other readers interested in the art world. It's prestigious profile gives it access to some of the worlds leading artists. A number of well-known artists have been commissioned to design special covers for the magazine. Edward Steichen did one for its 50th birthday; Alexander Calder, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Indiana also created covers.

The Art in America Guide has listing on more than 3,000 art professionals. It can also be searched for events, such as openings and art fairs. Listings on the guide are paid, so it is worth bearing in mind that while it is an important resource, it is not comprehensive.
